The contenders from left to right: Sony Xperia Z1, Nokia Lumia , LG G2 and Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom. It’s only been four months since we published our shootout between Apple’s iPhone 5, the Samsung Galaxy S4, HTC One and Nokia Lumia , but four months in the mobile technology universe is like an eternity. It seemed the time was right for another shootout with a slew of new devices. The candidates are:. If you want to see more images from the Xperia Z1, check out our sample gallery. Its 5. That said, the LG is one of the currently very few Android phones with an optical image stabilization system. The Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom is arguably the most unusual device in this test. To simulate realistic use cases all images were taken hand-held in Auto modes M-Mode on the Xperia Z1 to enable maximum image size.

Scroll down to see the results. This shot was taken on a bright but overcast day. As you can see in the samples below, in terms of exposure the Sony and LG are pretty close but the Samsung S4 Zoom has produced a visibly brighter image, the Sony a slightly darker one. The Nokia produces the warmest color response, the LG G2 the coolest. The Sony and Samsung fall in between. The image processing on all four devices is pretty punchy with strong contrast and saturation without crossing the line to looking unnatural.

Both images show some luminance noise, even at base ISO. Despite having a larger sensor than the LG, the Samsung image is the softest in this comparison and it appears the 10x zoom lens on our sony xperia z1 vs lumia 1020 camera unit is slightly soft at the wide angle setting. The Nokia Lumia delivers the best image quality in this test, with excellent fine detail and good exposure. The color response is a little on the warm side but overall in its 38MP image mode the Nokia is ahead of the other devices in good light.

Like the landscape tests above, in this night scene the Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom produces a slightly brighter exposure than the rest of the field. A look at the Exif data of our sample images reveals that in their auto modes all devices are aiming to keep the ISO as low as possible and therefore capture at shutter speeds that are, despite optical image stabilization systems on the Nokia, LG and Samsung, sony xperia z1 vs lumia 1020 camera, on the verge of being too slow for hand-held shooting.

We shot a series of images with each phone and only found one or two really sharp ones from each device when we sifted through the results on our computer screen. It would make more sense for the auto ISO function to select a higher setting and trade some image cleanliness for sony xperia z1 vs lumia 1020 camera. The Samsung and Nokia images are sharper but blighted by luminance noise grain and the effects of noise reduction.

Chromatic noise is well under control on all devices though. Of the remaining three devices the Samsung arguably offers the best compromise between noise and detail.

The Sony still shows acceptable detail at ISO but the image is very noisy and full of processing artifacts. The LG on the other hand is soft with very strong noise reduction applied which leads to a loss of almost all fine detail. There is some variation in terms of exposure, but overall all devices have handled this high-contrast situation pretty well and exposed for the person in the foreground. Inevitably this leads to highlight-clipping in the sunny background, sony xperia z1 vs lumia 1020 camera, but this is much preferable to an underexposed subject.

In the shade all devices produce a fairly similar slightly cool response. Only on the Samsung are the skin tones a touch warmer, giving the subject a slightly healthier appearance.

In these bright conditions slow shutter speeds and camera shake are not an issue, so in theory the cameras should be able to capture maximum detail. Despite the low sensitivities all images have visible noise in the shadow areas. The Nokia with its high-resolution sensor is the worst offender in this respect but still captures a lot of detail. The Sony lens is just getting a touch soft in our crop area but overall detail capture is decent, albeit with the same artifacts we saw in our landscape shots.

From an exposure and white balance point of view, the Sony is a good choice, although at a pixel level the image looks overprocessed. This indoor portrait was taken in a very dim room, with only some evening light coming through the window. A look at the Exif data of these images reveals that the devices follow quite different exposure approaches in lower light situations. The LG produces the brightest image followed by the Sony and the Samsung. The Nokia captures the darkest exposure.

This is reflected in the exposure data. The Galaxy S4 zoom puts a lot of trust in its optical image stabilization system and selects the lowest Sony xperia z1 vs lumia 1020 camera of The optical image stabilization does a decent job in counteracting camera shake but any subject movement will inevitably lead to blur at such a low shutter speeds. Like on the Samsung, the OIS works well but the danger of subject blur is high.

Chroma noise is well under control though. The Samsung, using a lower ISO setting, does a decent job too. There is some more noise reduction smearing than in the Noka image and a little bit of chroma noise in the shadows, but overall the S4 Zoom captures a good image as long as your subject keeps still, sony xperia z1 vs lumia 1020 camera. The Sony is not far off but again shows sony xperia z1 vs lumia 1020 camera lot of unpleasant noise artifacts when viewed up close.

The LG G2 has produced the softest image, sony xperia z1 vs lumia 1020 camera, thanks to a mixture of heavy noise reduction and a slow shutter speed. These flash pictures were taken in a very dark room that was only illuminated by a small amount of evening light shining through a window to the right of the subject.

In terms of exposure we like the Nokia image best. The scene is well illuminated and has a pleasant, slightly warm cast. The Samsung flash is equally powerful but has gone slightly over the top in terms of output and also produced a cooler, slightly unpleasant, color cast that is typical for many flash images.

Despite the higher ISO the Sony image is a little darker than the rest. In very dark conditions, for example in a dimly lit bar, you might as well leave the G2 in your pocket. The Nokia and Samsung on the other hand can produce visibly more detail by keeping the ISO down and using faster shutter speeds. Despite the red-eye-effect in our sample, overall we like the Nokia image best in this comparison but the Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom is an alternative if you need a mobile device for shooting in dimly lit environments.

However, those are not necessarily the image sizes you would use to share images on social networks or on the web in general. This is especially true for the 38MP images of the Nokia Lumia Part of the reason why the phone captures images with such high resolution is to improve the performance of the digital zoom and to reduce image noise by downsampling high-ISO images. Therefore you can configure the Nokia to only save a smaller 5MP version of your images or both a 5MP version along with the original 38MP file.

The Sony Xperia Z1 follows a similar concept. The Maximum ISO in this mode is In Auto mode the file size is 8MP. Like on the Nokia, the surplus pixels are being used to facilitate a better quality digital zoom and average out noise through downsampling. In our tests the Nokia Lumia sony xperia z1 vs lumia 1020 camera offers the best all-around image quality.

It captures great detail in good light and its Xenon flash provides excellent performance in very dim light situations. There is a lot of luminance noise in its high-ISO output but chroma noise is well under control and the very large 38MP image files mean that at normal viewing and printing sizes noise becomes much less visible. The only struggled in our night shot. In those situations we recommend upping the ISO manually in order to achieve a faster shutter speed.

The Sony Xperia Z1 also offers very high resolution results, but suffers from noise and artifacts at all ISO settings. Another advantage of the Sony is that thanks to its responsiveness and dedicated shutter button, sony xperia z1 vs lumia 1020 camera, in terms of operations it comes as close to a compact camera as a smartphone can get.

Its efficient optical image stabilization helps keep things very steady in low light but very strong noise reduction is applied at all ISO levels and its auto white balance tends to capture slightly cool colors. In fact, the lens of our test unit appeared to be slightly sony xperia z1 vs lumia 1020 camera at its wide angle setting. However, the Samsung is worth a look for those mobile photographer who want a powerful flash and an optical zoom.

Arguably most users would not choose their smartphone based on the camera alone. Nevertheless those who want a decent camera in their mobile device have more choice than ever.

Landscape This shot was taken on a bright but overcast day. Night Scene Like the landscape tests above, in this night scene the Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom produces a slightly brighter exposure than the rest of the field.
